With the ever growing concern over identity theft and scams, it is important that you take precautions to protect yourself and your accounts.
Tips to Protect Yourself
- Use electronic statements rather than mailed paper statements.
- Shred old bills, statements, and credit card offers.
- Minimize the amount of personal financial information you carry.
- Keep personal financial information in a secure place at home.
- Put outgoing mail in a secured box.
- Order a copy of your credit report at least once a year.
- Verify you are on a secure server before giving your credit card number or other financial information.
- If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Don’t let anyone rush you into making a decision.
- Don’t wire money to anyone, unless you are absolutely sure you know and can trust the person.
- When selling something online, beware of anyone who wants to overpay and asks you to reimburse the difference.
- Take the time to investigate a salesperson/contractor, unknown charities, or any offer or claim that seems suspicious or out of the ordinary.
- When using a public computer, be sure to use the log out option – and make sure the screen is turned so that other people cannot view it.
- Use strong passwords for online transactions. Passwords should be at least 8 characters, with a blend of letters, numbers, and symbols.
- If you are suspicious of someone you are receiving payment from, you can call the bank or have the person meet you at the bank to ensure it is a legitimate check.
- Be wary of quick credit fixes and get rich schemes.
