Small Business Saturday Success

Small Business Saturday was started in 2010 by American Express in an effort to encourage consumers to shop local during the holiday season. Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday is an important day for local businesses – for more than just financial reasons.

What small businesses and holiday shoppers should know:

If you are a small business owner, you might be wondering what you can do to make the most of Small Business Saturday. The best thing you can do is start planning now.

Five tips for a successful Small Business Saturday:

  1. Start early. Large retailers start talking about their holiday promotions early, and so should you.
  2. Bring in the whole neighborhood. Partner with other local businesses to get the most out of the day. Partnering with other businesses means more promotion for your business.
  3. Talk about it! An NFIB survey found that 55% of consumers know about Small Business Saturday, and 83% say it inspires them to shop small throughout the year3.  Promoting this day can bring more business throughout the year, so talk about it as much as possible! To promote Small Business Saturday, mix traditional advertising like postcards and posters with digital elements like email and social media to get the most reach.
  4.  Build customer loyalty & credibility. Encourage customers to “check-in” on Facebook. You’ll gain a new follower, plus their friends and family will see they are at your business.
  5.  Make sure your website is ready! Some shoppers only want to buy online. You can tap into the holiday shopping on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday even more with a strong website.
